The Need For Change
The loss of a child is every parent’s worst nightmare. For many Black parents who have lost a loved one to violence, that pain is compounded by unfair or inaccurate assumptions about their children and families. Voices of Black Mothers United empowers family members to tell their loved ones’ unique stories and raise awareness of the number of Black children lost to neighborhood violence each year.
Many mothers who are working through the trauma of their loss are now empowering others to tell their stories.
The death of a child can set off a destructive chain of events that damages entire communities:
26% of parents die within the first 10 years after experiencing the trauma of losing a child.
92% of marriages fail within the first 10 years after experiencing the trauma of losing a child.
Voices of Black Mothers United works in communities across the country to offer hope and healing, as well as strengthen neighborhoods to prevent future tragedies.

Key Focus Areas and Initiatives
The work of Voices of Black Mothers United focuses on three major areas: advocacy, family and community intervention, and promoting positive policing (PPP).
Family & Community Intervention
Voices of Black Mothers United promotes both individual and community responsibility, working with community leaders and law-enforcement to identify neighborhood risk factors that could contribute to a violent environment.
We facilitate local problem-solving efforts including crime tip lines, neighborhood watch programs and other crime awareness measures.
Advocacy
Voices of Black Mothers United affiliated groups across the nation support grieving families with a variety of resources, including:
- Ongoing grief recovery and support
- Media/communications training
- Financial assistance
- Assistance accessing victim compensations resources
- Advocacy training
- Referrals for mental health and legal resources
VBMU goes beyond candlelight vigils to help grieving families turn their pain into purpose. We recognize the unique insight and moral authority of mothers in particular, that enables them to make their communities safer for everyone.
Promoting Positive Policing (PPP)
Having witnessed surges in crime and violence in the absence of law-enforcement, members of Voices of Black Mothers United strongly oppose efforts to defund the police, while working to counter discriminatory policing and excessive and irresponsible law enforcement tactics.
We work in communities across the nation to facilitate better communication between law enforcement and community members, to improve and strengthen trust, and advocate for sensible police reform where necessary.
Voices of Black Mothers United unifies Black mothers, fathers, siblings, community members, volunteers, business leaders, and faith leaders to work together to end violence in our communities.
