CAN Story – The Caruthers Scholars Program

Posted By Woodson Center

Hope Delgado is transforming her community in Caruthers, California, by delivering “tangible hope and opportunities” through her organization, The Caruthers Scholars Program. This program is dedicated to closing the educational gap that has left the town significantly below the national average in educational attainment. Through her efforts, Ms. Delgado provides vital resources for graduating high school students, including access to free internet, after-school tutoring, and hosting guest speakers who cover topics such as educational pathways, resume building, and vocational training.

Thanks to the support of the Woodson Center Rising Leaders grant, Ms. Delgado has expanded her impact with the STAR (Striving Through Adversity and Resilience) program. This initiative offers small scholarships to students facing financial challenges, easing the transition from high school to college. A proud graduate of Berkeley and a former beneficiary of similar services, Ms. Delgado passionately shares, “With Latinos making up about 71.53% of the population, only 12.4% have attained a bachelor’s degree, and just 2.2% hold a graduate or professional degree. The Caruthers Scholars Program aims to create a permanent space—a café—designed to foster an educationally stimulating environment that encourages personal growth and academic success. Our goal is to propel disadvantaged students toward a brighter, more prosperous future.”

We deeply appreciate your support in helping us sustain and grow Ms. Delgado’s inspiring vision!
