“The Woodson Center Rising Leader grant played a pivotal role in establishing the foundation for our organization, Mommaste, setting us on a path to sustainability by focusing on developing our infrastructure.” ~ Dr. LeTea Perry, co-founder of Mommaste

Dr. LeTea Perry and Dr. Tricialand Hilliard Tyrone co-founded Mommaste, an innovative non-profit that supports women facing reproductive challenges, including women undergoing fertility treatments and those in need of alternative postpartum care after pregnancy loss. They are also deconstructing the myth about motherhood, that the mere desire or decision to become a mother automatically defines you as one.

“We utilized the mini-grant to hire a business coach, who helped us craft a strong foundation, including defining our mission, vision, and philosophy,” said Dr. Perry. “Additionally, we were able to hire someone to create our website, enabling us to have a virtual office and helping others learn more about who we are.”

“Women often suffer in silence when met with fertility challenges. Thanks to Mommaste, we can give these women a voice, providing resources, emotional and financial support to assist women from all backgrounds along their reproductive journeys,” Dr. Perry explained.

The inspiration for Mommaste emerged from Dr. Perry’s personal journey. At age 40, she faced medical challenges and was given a small window of opportunity to conceive. She opted for IVF, with little knowledge of the complex road ahead. After suffering two miscarriages and a failed IVF cycle, she felt devastated. However, with the support of friends and her own research into available financial resources and alternative treatments, she was eventually able to conceive her daughter, Journee.

“Now, I want to give back to other women on their journey to motherhood,” said Dr. Perry.

With continued support from organizations like the Woodson Center, Dr. Perry says she is committed to providing resources such as healing and restorative retreats for women undergoing fertility treatment and those who have experienced pregnancy loss, provide referrals to foundations that provide financial scholarships for women unable to cover the costs of fertility treatment, and equip women with the knowledge to navigate their reproductive journey.
