I wanted the youth to experience a new and different environment away from their crime-ridden, violent neighborhoods, gifting them time to breathe fresh air, unplug from technology, and enjoy the wonders of nature.– Aummett Paige, AAMPOE
Aummett is the founder of Anacostia AMP Outreach Empowerment Center (AAMPOE), a non-profit organization in Southeast Washington, D.C. that is bringing H.O.P.E. (Healing, Opportunity, Peace/Provision, and Empowerment) to underserved communities east of the Anacostia River. AAMPOE provides life-enhancing programs to at-risk children and youth (5 to 17 years old), low-income families, and the unsheltered population.
AAMPOE used their 2022 Woodson Center mini-grant to support a new program called “Youth Wilderness Adventure Project.” Aummett took 30 youths (10 to 14 years old) out of the inner-city and into the wild – some for the first time in their lives!
“I have been receiving funding and training support from the Woodson Center for the past three years,” Aummett said. “Woodson Center’s grant process is much more simplified, which makes it possible for those of us with a small community-based organization, who couldn’t afford a grant writer, to apply. Woodson Center was my first source of funding, which has since opened so many doors for me!”
