Nonprofit organizations and grassroots leaders (including those belonging to our 26-state Community Affiliates Network), are at various stages of organizational development. The Woodson Center (WC) helps grassroots individuals and organizations build operational capacity by assessing their needs and providing training and technical assistance.
Visionaries often make poor bookkeepers (Bob Woodson). We help build the capacity of grassroots organizations by providing free training and technical assistance (TTA) to leaders of community and faith-based organizations. Our TTA may help start a 501(c)(3), strengthen the agency’s financial, organizational and program management practices, create effective resouce development plans or access new technology.
Since our founding in 1981, the Woodson Center has trained more than 2600 leaders of grassroots organizations in 39 states and helped link them to resources totaling more than 10 times what the WC has expended. This includes more than 70 faith-based and community groups in Washington, DC that benefitted from the WC’s extensive technical assistance provided through the Compassion Capital Fund of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services.
The WC is a strong advocate for community-based programs and works at the national and state level to remove barriers to their life-restoring initiatives through research, communications and public policy.
Our core technical assistance focus areas are Board Development, Financial Management, Human Resources, Information Technology, Organizational Development, Program Development, Evaluation and Data Management and Resource Development. Through our leadership development and techncial assistance services, we are currently building the capacity of 200 grassroots organizations in 26 states that are members of our national Community Affiliates Network (CAN). The CAN network links our organizations together so they can share information, jointly pursue resources, discuss best practices and participate in structured leadership, organizational and community development trainings.
