CNE Board Member Rev. DeForest B. “Buster” Soaries is featured in a groundbreaking CNN special hosted by Soledad O’Brien, Thursday, October 21, at 9 p.m. ET. In the program entitled “Almighty Debt: A Black in America Special,” Pastor Soaries charges that “Debt is worse than racism” for Black America. The show highlights how his church is helping parishioners deal with the challenges of the economic crisis.

Pastor Soaries, a former New Jersey Secretary of State, is Senior Pastor, First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens, Somerset, New Jersey. Among the church’s achievements: recruiting 345 families to become foster parents to 700 children; helping 220 children find adoptive parents; construction 145 new homes for low and moderate income residents to own; and redeveloping 150,000 square feet of commercial real estate.

CNN is making the show the centerpiece of an education effort and is releasing an online Teacher and Parent Guide that includes discussion questions, a suggested learning activity, and correlations to national teaching standards.
